Capital Police Busts Gang of Two-Wheeler Thieves, Recovers 53 Stolen Bikes

 ITANAGAR | Sep | 5 :

The Capital Police have arrested a four-member gang of two-wheeler thieves and recovered 53 stolen two-wheeler. The accused persons have been identified as Bisho Mili (32), Pranab Kutum (30) I, Pranab Kutum (20) II, and Apollo Pegu (30).

The police said that the gang had been operating in the Capital since 2019 and had stolen at least 30 two-wheelers in the last four months. They had a unique modus operandi through which they would steal vehicles on demand too, apart from stealing at whim and selling them off at cheap prices.

The police were able to crack the case after they received a complaint from one Takio Kanu of Sekay Colony, Itanagar that his Yamaha R15 bike was stolen from Sekay Colony area on the intervening night of June 14-15. The police traced the bike using a GPS tracking system installed in the bike  and recovered it from Dhenudhara Village, Gohpur (Assam) on the same day.

On recovery of the stolen bike, the police mounted technical surveillance on potential suspects and engaged sources to identify the thieves. A scientific pattern analysis into the incidents of two-wheeler theft was also conducted, which revealed the presence of the well-organized gang.

Traps were laid to apprehend the gang members and on July 24, the Chimpu PS team managed to arrest one of the accused persons, Bisho Mili, the gang leader of the case. The other three accused persons were arrested subsequently.

The police have also seized several tools and equipment used for stealing vehicles from the possession of the accused persons.
